What they said

Ben: "It's complex. Being cool."
Amy: "Aargh! I love it! I've been waiting to get my hands on something dirty!"

Logline:
British youth collides with crazy Balkan kid in a bid to survive in a strange city.

Synopsis:

When young musician Damien blows out on an audition for a gig, he thinks he's hit rock bottom, deserted by his band and by sexy on-off lover Gina.

In search of diversion, he finds himself befriended by Redi, a guy more desperate than he is, one of London's many semi-legal visitors on a quest to save his sister Malvina from the sex trade. Sucked into the underbelly of a city he barely knows, Damien starts playing music with Redi.

Like a magic charm, their sound draws others in... not just other musicians and punters - also the gang they're running from.

Creative Personnel:

Fiona Howe (Screenwriter/Producer) is a trained musician with a long-standing interest in the representation of the emotional workings of the creative musical mind. She plays flute and piano when she isn’t raising finance for independent feature films and doing film consultancy. She has worked for many years in tv and film production at the BBC, as a script editor and development producer at Granada, has written for German and French tv as well as in the UK, and regularly gives screenwriting master classes around Europe.

Gareth Jones (Screenwriter/Director) is also a musician whose first professional steps were as a street busking guitarist and singer/songwriter. He trained as a theatre director with Prospect Theatre and the Royal Court, directing Shakespeare, Chekhov, Strindberg and Brecht, as well as his own plays. In his early tv directing career he did a stint on the much loved Coronation Street before becoming an award-winning director of self-penned tv drama serials such as BBC2’s Shalom Salaam, a Jewish-Muslim love story which notably involved his work with an excellent young cast including Mamta Kaash and Ayub Khan Din. More recently he wrote the screenplay of award-winning German feature Bonhoeffer-Agent of Grace starring Ulrich Tukur. He was also the sole director of the first two series of much-loved cult comedy series Brass, starring Timothy West. He’s known as a film consultant working in four languages across Europe and beyond.

Cathy Stocker (Music Composer) is a musician and fine artist. She was singer, songwriter and guitarist for Leeds band The Birthdays (AKA ‘Birth’) in the mid 90’s, where she played support to INXS (Town & Country Club, Leeds as part of their Get Out of The House Tour, 1993), The Cranberries, PJ Harvey and Shed Seven, amongst others, touring around Britain in a white transit van. She gained her Fine Art degree at Leeds Polytechnic and has exhibited her paintings in London and Bristol. She collaborated with Aaron Pouncy and Pat Viner to create dance music project FUMES whose debut album of 2003 is still available via the Fumes website. She is presently teamed up with some of the best acoustic musical talent : Ed Freitas (Drums/Percussion), Graham Pike (Harmonica/Piano), Harvey Brown (Violin/Viola), Chris Ross (Bass) and Markus Zee (Percussion) who together are STOCKER. See website for gigs.

Alex Ryle (Director of Photography) studied under Brian Tufano BSC at NFTS and graduated as cinematographer in 2005. His graduation film Incomplete, a hilarious study in male angst directed by Yann Demange, won Best Short Comedy at the Illinois Film Festival 2006, was nominated for several other awards and screened at Palm Springs and LA; other shorts have been officially selected at numerous festivals including Edinburgh FF and LA Short Film Festival. Feature credits include The Witches Hammer; Darkhunters; Web of Deceit and Hellbreeder. He has been three times nominated for the Broadcast Young Talent Award (Best Lighting/Camera category).
